Major Subar Rai - The Commanding Officer, Guard Unit, GSU

Major Subar Rai, Commanding Officer of the Guard Unit, is a retired Captain from the 2nd Royal Gurkha Rifles, British Army, bringing with him 26 years of distinguished service experience in leadership, operations, training, and professional development. He joined the Gurkha Security Unit (GSU) on 23 January 2013, initially serving as the Second-in-Command of C Company. He was appointed as Officer Commanding of C Company on 20 August 2015, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain on      21 November 2015. Throughout his career within the organisation, he has held several key command and staff appointments.

In July 2019, he was appointed Staff Officer Grade 3 (G2/G3). In this capacity, he spearheaded significant training and security advancements, including introducing the Warrant Officer Course, reviving the Drill Instructor Course, and transitioning the curriculum from Methods of Instruction (MOI) to Basic Instructional Techniques (BIT). He also modernised institutional training oversight by installing CCTV systems within the Training Department.

On 14 September 2020, he transitioned to the role of Second-in-Command of the Guard Unit, where he successfully instituted the Performance Monitoring Team (PMT) to strengthen accountability, efficiency, and operational standards. In 2021, he also served as the main Coordinator of the Red Force for the Exercise Hikmat Bersatu XI, demonstrating exceptional operational planning and coordination capabilities during large-scale exercises.

Major Subar Rai assumed the appointment of Staff Officer Grade 2 (G2/G3) on 30 January 2025, conducting a comprehensive review of emergency response and call-out procedures through rigorous Field Training Exercises. Concurrently, he successfully revised operational kits and equipment under the “Time to Change” initiative, further enhancing operational readiness and modernising capability within the organisation. Following these achievements, he was appointed as the Commanding Officer of the Guard Unit on 22 December 2025.

Major Subar Rai is a decorated officer, holding the 2-Year GSU Medal and the 9-Year GSU Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
